mCLASS Lectura
Context
mCLASS Lectura is an early literacy assessment program for Spanish speaking students. Elementary teachers schedule time with each student to administer several one-minute assessments. One of the assessments, fluidez en la lectura de palabras (word reading fluency), identifies if a student reads a word correctly. The teacher instructs the student to read words from a sheet of paper, and they mark any incorrect words in the assessment application.
Problem
The previous version of fluidez en la lectura de palabras didn’t allow teachers to record how students approached a word. Teachers felt they had an incomplete picture of student performance.
Solution
The redesign adds an additional layer of insights to teachers, allowing them to record if a student decoded at the syllable level (sílabas), identified letter sounds (sonidos), or both. The student’s score is based on a right or wrong answer, but the additional details provide teachers with more information about a student’s reading capabilities to better inform instruction.
